Travelling with pet animals
携带宠物旅行
Pet animals are defined as:
- Dogs, cats and ferrets
- Birds (except poultry*)
- Domestic rabbits and rodents
- Reptiles and amphibia
- Invertebrates (except bees and crustaceans)
- Ornamental tropical fish
* Poultry means fowl, turkeys, guinea fowl, ducks, geese, quails, pigeons, pheasants, partridges and ratites (Ratitae) reared or kept in captivity for breeding, the production of meat or eggs for consumption, or for re-stocking supplies of game.
Travelling with pet animals are defined as:
- Pet animals of the above mentioned species, which are accompanying their owner during their import to or export from Denmark
- Pet animals of the above mentioned species, which are not intended to be sold or transferred to another owner (equals non-commercial transport)
Accompanied transport
The pet animal must accompany the owner or a natural person responsible for the pet animal on behalf of the owner must accompany during the transport in order to fulfil the requirements for non-commercial transport.
A company specializing in pet air travel, pet shipping and pet transportation services is not considered as an accompanied transport.
If the pet animal is not accompanied by the owner or a natural person responsible for it on behalf of the owner, the animal health requirements for commercial trade pet animals must be fulfilled.

Max. 5 dogs, cats or ferret within the EU
As from 27 May 2010 it will only be possible to travel with max. 5 animals of the species dogs, cats or ferrets, also when travelling within the EU.
If you travel with more than five animals of these species the animal health requirements for commerciel movement applies.
Travelling with pet animals from third countries
A total of 5 animals may be imported to the EU Member States from thirds countries (i.e. other countries than EU Member States, except animals from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marina, Switzerland and the Vatican City States).
Are more than five animals imported from third countries the animal health requirement for commercial import applies.
Import from third countries must be notified to the Border Inspection Post
Pet animals imported directly from third countries may enter Denmark through the Border Inspection Post at Copenhagen Airport and Billund Airport.
Pet animals, which originates from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marina, Switzerland and the Vatican City States, may enter Denmark through all border crossings.
At the Border Inspection Post document and identity checks are carried out. If the point of entry is another EU Member State document and identity checks will be carried out in that EU Member State.
At least 24 hours prior to arrival the Border Inspection Post must be notified of the import.

Proper identification is important
Are you bringing your dog, cat or ferret to Denmark (or the EU) it is very important that the animal is identifiable by either a microchip or a clearly readable tattoo, eg. an ear tattoo.
From July 3, 2011 only a microchip will be regarded as a proper identification.

Bying puppies and kittens abroad
If you want to bye a puppy or kitten abroad, please be aware that the import requirement also applies here.
However, permission may be granted for import of puppies and kittens under 3 months of age, not vaccinated againt rabies from certain countries
How to apply for import permission of unvaccinated puppies and kittens.
Max. 5 dogs, cats or ferrets or animals travelling alone
If the animal is travelling unaccompanied by its owner or a person responsible for the animal on behalf of the owner, the animal health requirement for commercial import applies.
If more than 5 animals of the species dogs, cats or ferrets are imported from Third Countries, the animal health requirements for commercial import also applies.
Finally, as from 27 May 2010 it will only be possible to travel with max. 5 animals of the species dogs, cats or ferrets, also when travelling within the EU.
If you travel with more than five animals of these species the animal health requirements for commerciel movement applies.
